The main goal of going to Philly was to eat, and eat we did. Besides a short detour into the King of Prussia mall (lucky Pennslvanites) and a walkabout in the historic district, all we did was to drive to restaurants and back.

There are three famous cheesesteak places: Pat’s, Geno’s and Jim’s. I only tried Pat’s and it wasn’t very good. Although I liked the cheese whiz, the beef was too tough and the bread was nothing spectacular. I much preferred the ones we get in Ithaca and Quiznos.

Spur of the moment poseur shot, after finishing our cheesesteaks.

One of the two fine dining restaurants I ate at was Morimoto, of Iron Chef fame. IT WAS SO GOOD. We reached the place early and had a drink at the lounge, which was located on an upper level and overlooked the main dining area. The interior design was Scandinavian inspired, with an undulating wooden ceiling with sculptural walls flanking the sides. The seating area had back lit dividers which changed colors. A little tacky, but still interesting.

Although it was pricey, it didn’t have a snobbish atmosphere. In fact, it was as noisy as a regular food court, as everyone was seated in close proximity. We could barely hear our server. I also liked that we didn’t have to wear suits to dinner. We had the 120 dollar omakase tasting menu: tuna tartare, squid, sushi, balsamic soda, lobster, kobe beef, more fish, oysters, green mango ice cream and flourless chocolate cake, not necessarily in that order. No great pictures of the food because it was so dimly lit, and we didn’t want to appear too fobby.

With Sarah–she has been to both Morimotos.

With Huangyu–he’s coming to Morocco with me.
